When it comes to sports-predicting animals, the gold standard would have to be Paul the Octopus, who made multiple correct predictions for matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup before dying in October of that year.
Time will tell if Zoo Miami’s Bonsai the bearcat (or binturong, if you prefer) will be as good as international soccer’s fondly remembered cephalopod.
But every animal’s gotta start somewhere, and so today, Bonsai was posed with the question of who he thought would win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Die-cast cars for all four championship contenders – Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, and Ryan Newman – were laid out in a line for Bonsai before he was let out of his cage.
After a few seconds, Bonsai started to nudge Hamlin’s 1/24-scale No. 11 FedEx Toyota Camry forward while also trying to gnaw on its rear spoiler.
Looks like we’ve found somebody that doesn’t think Kevin Harvick’s the favorite this Sunday in South Florida.
To be fair, though, Hamlin is the defending champion at the 1.5-mile Homestead oval and is the only one of the Championship 4 to have won there (twice; 2009, 2013).
