Perez hoping for Force India confirmation soon

ABU DHABI – Sergio Perez is hoping that Force India will soon be in a position to confirm that he will be racing for the team in 2015.

The Mexican driver joined Force India at the beginning of 2014 when he was dropped by McLaren after just one year, and has enjoyed a good season, finishing on the podium in his third grand prix for the team.

His teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, has already been confirmed, and team owner Vijay Mallya has long stated that he has an option on Perez’s contract that he intends to use. There has still been no official announcement, though.

Speaking to the media on Thursday in Abu Dhabi, Perez said that the finer points of his deal were still being discussed, but he hopes that an announcement can be made soon.

“We have made some improvements since the last time we met [the media], so I’m optimistic,” Perez said. “I think Vijay has really helped us to move forwards, all of the team. That’s something that makes me proud and wanting to continue. Hopefully, quite soon, we can do an announcement.

“We were talking about extending my deal. Obviously, it’s a contract so it’s difficult to give too much detail on that. All I can say is that we’ve moved forward and I really hope very soon we can do an announcement and share my plans.”

When asked if the team was talking to any other drivers, Perez said: “No, they’re not talking to anyone else, as far as I know.

Currently ranking 12th in the championship with 47 points, Perez said that he was pleased with how the season has unfolded given his late signing after McLaren decided to replace him.

“You have to look at my end-of-season with McLaren, getting to know very late that I was not staying,” he said. “It’s the same situation that the drivers have at the moment at McLaren. You have to look for another alternative very late in the season. It takes time, it’s not so easy.

“I was on the podium on the third race for the team, so that was really good. On the other hand, when our car was at its best, I was adapting to the team, and we had some reliability issues as well, so we lost a lot of ground in the first half of the season.

“I’ve got more points than my teammate in the second half and that’s something that gives me good motivation. I think we’ve done great races this year and we’ve shown that we have the space straightaway, so I think it has been a good season.”
