Daniel Ricciardo is looking forward to racing alongside Daniil Kvyat at Red Bull next year, believing that the young Russian will pose a good challenge during his sophomore F1 season.
Kvyat made his Formula 1 debut at the beginning of 2014, but has been fast-tracked to Red Bull for 2015 following Sebastian Vettel’s decision to leave the team for Ferrari.
Speaking to the team’s website, Ricciardo admitted that he was surprised by Kvyat’s quick promotion, although he is anticipating a good battle in 2015 with the Russian.
“It was a surprise, but also not because you can never be surprised with what Red Bull does,” Ricciardo said. “To be honest, I’ve followed him probably for the last five years and he’s always been pretty quick and adapted very quickly.
“I really thought this year in Formula 1 he had some fantastic showings, and I wasn’t too surprised in the end.
“I knew it would be someone from the Red Bull programme and he’s young but I expect him to be quick. It should be a good battle.”
Reflecting on his season, Ricciardo said that despite winning three races, he does not feel under any extra pressure to impress in 2015 when he steps up to the role of team leader at Red Bull.
“The weight of expectation won’t affect me, but the reality is now that I can win and people know that I’ve, shall we say, got the goods,” Ricciardo said.
“So if I’m coming sixth and seventh when they feel the car should be fourth and fifth then that obviously isn’t meeting expectations, but it honestly doesn’t add any more pressure to me.”
