DTM champion Marco Wittmann will test a 2012-spec Toro Rosso car at Imola in Italy next week as a reward for winning the German touring car championship title.
Last month, BMW surprised Wittmann by telling him he would be testing for Toro Rosso at the post-season test in Abu Dhabi, only for the team to then run 17-year-old Max Verstappen on both days.
Today, BMW has confirmed that Wittmann, 25, will now take part in a test for the Italian team on Thursday at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari – better known as Imola.
“A special appointment will await Wittmann on Thursday,” a statement reads. “In recognition of his performances in this DTM season, BMW Motorsport is giving him the opportunity to achieve a childhood dream and Wittmann will test a Formula One car for the first time.
“At Imola, he will drive a 2012 Scuderia Toro Rosso car. This test is organised in co-operation with BMW Motorsport premium partner Red Bull.”
BMW also confirmed that GP3 champion Alex Lynn, 2013 GP2 vice-champion Sam Bird, Indy Lights runner-up Jack Harvey, FIA F3 runner-up Tom Blomqvist and GP3 racer Richie Stanaway will be testing its DTM-spec M4 in Jerez next week.
