For race fans, the question of “Which Super Bowl commercial was the best?” has already been answered before halftime.
Nissan’s minute-and-a-half offering, called “With Dad,” hit the airwaves during the second quarter of Super Bowl XLIX on NBC. It marked the first reveal of Nissan’s new World Endurance Championship and Le Mans challenger – the GT-R LM NISMO prototype for the WEC’s LMP1 category.
One of those GT-R prototypes will be driven by former Le Mans winner and Formula One pilot Marc Gene.
“It gave us great pride to reveal the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO during the Super Bowl,” said Roel de Vries, Global Head of Marketing and Brand Strategy at Nissan, in a statement. “The combination of the Super Bowl and the Le Mans 24 Hours – two of the most watched sporting events in the world – presented us with a unique opportunity to showcase our most ambitious motorsport program in recent times.
“The GT-R is our flagship road car. This, the ultimate GT-R, continues a sporting bloodline that goes back three decades with NISMO, the motorsport and performance arm of Nissan. Le Mans drives innovation so success on the track will lead to greater innovation in our road car range.
“We are the new kids at Le Mans; our opponents are the best in the world but we are ready.”
Even better, the car is part of the clip’s poignant story, which progresses over time and centers around a sports car driver and his family.
The son grows up and cultivates a life of his own with friends and school, while the father goes from racing Nissans in the Pirelli World Challenge to driving the aforementioned GT-R. But as you’ll see in the ending, their love and togetherness as a family endures.
You can watch the rest of the Super Bowl XLIX commercials on NBC’s Super Bowl Tumblr page.
Nissan has also released a car-specific clip beyond the ad, linked below.
