Through championship success on the track, as well as success as a national ambassador for the sport, Jeff Gordon has helped make his No. 24 one of the most revered numbers in NASCAR history.
But at the end of the 2015 Sprint Cup season, it won’t be his anymore. The No. 24 will go to current Xfinity Series champion Chase Elliott upon his ascension to full-time Cup racing in 2016.
Some within the NASCAR fan base quickly disagreed with the decision to have Elliott run the No. 24. But Gordon has given it his blessing, saying that he wants to see the No. 24 “go on to do great things.”
And Elliott certainly understands what the number has come to mean over time.
Today’s episode of NASCAR AMERICA will feature sit-down interviews with Elliott and his Xfinity Series boss (and future Cup teammate) Dale Earnhardt Jr.
You can watch it today at 5 p.m. ET on NBCSN and NBC Sports Live Extra, but for now, here’s a teaser clip of Elliott discussing how much the opportunity to drive the No. 24 means to him.
