If you attend this weekend’s NHRA season-opening Circle K Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, Calif., if you look due south past the finish line, you’ll see Mountain Meadows Golf Course.
Funny Car drag racer Chad Head – an avid golfer, as well – decided to combine both of his athletic loves Wednesday.
As his team teed up his race car for the season opener, Head teed off – from the top of his car, no less – using a golf club to hit a ball and try to cover the length of the 1,000 foot dragstrip.
Head, son of veteran drag racer Jim Head, came up a bit short of hitting the golf course, but there’s no question the intention was there. Like in drag racing, he just needed a little more power.
Still, it was a fun promotion: Head’s 10,000 horsepower Toyota Camry Funny Car is sponsored by the TaylorMade Golf company and features its revolutionary AeroBurner driver – both with the same “Made Of Speed” tagline.
“We are excited about the opportunity to showcase the TaylorMade AeroBurner on our Toyota Funny Car and can’t think of a better parallel between the AeroBurner product attributes and the sport of NHRA,” Head said. “This is a great chance for TaylorMade to introduce AeroBurner to the NHRA fan base.”
After an inadvertent hook to the left on his first shot – “Oops, sorry,” Head told a spectator – he sliced his second shot to the right before finally sending a couple of decent shots straight down the middle of the fairway … err, dragstrip.
Now if he can only do the same thing behind the wheel this weekend.
