The North American open-wheel racing season kicks off this week with the annual Cooper Tires Winterfest for the Mazda Road to Indy.
Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires test, while both the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda each have tripleheader races on tap.
Action occurs at NOLA Motorsports Park this week on Feb. 18-19, before shifting to Barber Motorsports Park Feb. 24-25.
- 8Star Motorsports will only test at Barber, not NOLA, with Scott Hargrove. The Canadian is confirmed for the season opener only at this point.
- Otherwise the field of 12 for Indy Lights is the same as it was at Homestead-Miami last month, with two to three more additions likely to be confirmed before the St. Petersburg season opener.
- Pro Mazda’s list includes Alessandro Latif, the 18-year-old sports car veteran who has signed with World Speed Motorsports (listed on entry as M1 Autosport, but that will change). Watch this space on him, as Latif is a very intriguing prospect.
- Jake Eidson shifts from Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing to Pabst Racing for Winterfest in USF2000. Eidson, along with Aaron Telitz, Victor Franzoni and four others have some USF2000 race experience – the remaining 11 drivers in the 18-car field are rookies.
