Big day for birthdays: Roger Penske, Bobby Unser and Charlie Kimball

February 20 marks a big day for birthdays in the North American open-wheel racing arena.

Today “The Captain,” Roger Penske, turns 78. Penske is widely regarded as North American racing’s most successful team owner, with his run of success in IndyCar, NASCAR and even Formula 1 unmatched and unparalleled over the last 50 years.

This, of course, while Penske is also renowned for his business acumen and work for all his automotive dealerships.

Penske’s right-hand man, Penske Racing president Tim Cindric, did well to pay tribute with a birthday wish on Twitter:

One of Penske’s most successful drivers is Bobby Unser, who like “RP” has a birthday today. The three-time Indianapolis 500 champion turns 81 today.

Unser will be honored at the upcoming RRDC Dinner in Long Beach in April.

A current driver who competes for Penske’s widely regarded top rival in the Verizon IndyCar Series, Chip Ganassi Racing, also has a birthday today.

Charlie Kimball turns 30, as the Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing driver prepares to enter his fifth season in the championship.

Kimball’s best season came two years ago in 2013, when he finished ninth in points and scored his first career win at Mid-Ohio.

He’ll look to get back to that level after a decent 2014, but one where there was a slight drop off compared to his 2013 efforts. Newly married and with a renewed focus, Kimball will again be one to watch this year.

Alas, all three share 2/20 as a birthday, and we at MotorSportsTalk wish them all the best this year and beyond.
