Following the example set by Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo on Friday, Daniil Kvyat enjoyed a very productive day in testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, completing 112 laps in total on Saturday.
The Russian youngster could only finish sixth in the final classification with a best lap of 1:26.589, but managed to complete a full race simulation in the afternoon session.
Mirroring Ricciardo’s run on Friday, Kvyat completed a full 66-lap run to replicate conditions for the Spanish Grand Prix in May. Although he is unable to say where the team lies in the pecking order, the Russian is encouraged by the consistency being shown.
“We learned a lot today,” Daniil said. “It was good to follow up Daniel’s total of yesterday with a lot of laps again today. That kind of consistent running is very useful for us and very encouraging.
“It’s hard to know where we are and it’s too early to make any kind of predictions, even though we’re getting closer to the first race.
“We’re just getting on with the job, making the car better every day and very productive days like today are really important.”
Kvyat’s 66-lap run comprised of four pit stops, with the Red Bull looking very consistent on the medium compound tire. He did have to pit for a final tire change after 64 of the 66 laps after over-working the softs though, suggesting that there is still room for improvement at Red Bull as testing continues.
However, the team’s pace has done enough to make Lewis Hamilton believe that he will face a tougher fight for the championship in 2015, and Kvyat will be gunning to make his sophomore year in F1 a memorable one.
