Series rookie Ralph Boschung set the pace on the second and final day of the first GP3 pre-season test at Estoril to finish ahead of championship favorite Marvin Kirchhofer with the fastest time of the meeting.
Two ranks below Formula 1, GP3 acts as a direct feeder series to GP2, but has produced a number of recent F1 drivers including Daniil Kvyat, Valtteri Bottas and Esteban Gutierrez.
The new GP3 season kicks off in May in support of the Spanish Grand Prix, but the drivers and teams got their first taste of on-track action in 2015 on Wednesday at Estoril as Ferrari junior Antonio Fuoco set the fastest time.
However, it was 17-year-old Boschung who set the pace on Thursday, recording the quickest time of the two-day test with a lap of 1:27.789.
His closest rival was Kirchhofer, who as last year’s third-place finisher enters 2015 as the early favorite for this year’s title. The German was less than two-tenths of a second adrift, but did enough to finish ahead of Emil Bernstorff in third place.
The GP3 teams and drivers will reconvene in Valencia, Spain on April 9 for the next two-day test, with the final pre-season running then coming in Barcelona on April 22 and 23.
