The Verizon IndyCar series will open its 2015 campaign on March 29 with the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in Florida.
St. Petersburg also happened to be the home track of late IndyCar and Indy 500 champion Dan Wheldon after he moved to the U.S. in 1999. Wheldon even won the inaugural IndyCar event at the track in 2005.
According to USA Today, Wheldon’s two sons, Sebastian, 6, and Oliver, 4, were honored during Grand Prix of St. Petersburg media day on Thursday.
Oliver was given a cake as he celebrated his birthday and Sebastian actually got some track time.
Sebastian led the parade laps for the fifth-annual pro/am kart race at Andersen RacePark in Palmetto, Fla.
Sebastian was born in 2009 and Oliver in 2011, the year Dan Whelson father died from injuries suffered in a crash in IndyCar’s season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
