Nico Rosberg expects Mercedes to return the front of the field at this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix after suffering a shock defeat to Ferrari last time out in Malaysia.
Tire management issues for Mercedes in the heat of Sepang allowed Sebastian Vettel to perfectly execute a two-stop strategy and claim his first win for Ferrari in just his second race with the Italian marque.
Although the result gave some hope of a serious title battle between Mercedes and Ferrari in 2015, most have deemed the win to be largely circumstantial and not a sign of things to come.
Speaking to reporters ahead of this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix, Rosberg said that he expects Mercedes to be back in front in Shanghai as he goes in search of his first win since the Brazilian Grand Prix.
“I want to win so of course having Sebastian win in Malaysia was not good,” Rosberg said. “I hope to beat him and Lewis [Hamilton] here, and that’s it.
“I’m sure also we will have a stronger car than in Malaysia. I’m expecting us to be the best again here.”
Rosberg spoke earlier this week about needing to turn his form around, having only beaten teammate and probable championship rival Lewis Hamilton on track once since the German Grand Prix last July.
However, he is not worried about the early season defeats to the defending world champion, believing that the current ten point deficit will not be make or break at the end of the year.
“Of course every race is important but there’s still a long way to go and consistency is still going to be very important,” Rosberg said. “As we saw last year, all these things are going to play into it.
“So I’m not panicking or anything, but of course I want to do a great job and try to win.”
