After topping all three practice sessions so far this weekend at the Shanghai International Circuit, defending Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton heads into qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix as the firm favorite for pole position.

The British driver has enjoyed an advantage over Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg all weekend long, but now needs to make it count when it matters in qualifying as he goes in search of his fifth pole position at this event.

The fight for pole position may appear to be a foregone conclusion, but Ferrari continues to linger in the shadows behind Mercedes following its shock victory at the Malaysian Grand Prix two weeks ago. Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen may struggle to beat both Hamilton and Rosberg in qualifying, but splitting the Silver Arrows certainly is a possibility.

Further back, Red Bull and Williams appear to be embroiled in a battle for third place as the leading two teams continue to power ahead at the front. Ironically, Red Bull’s apparent resurgence in China has come on the same weekend as the most serious threat to quit the sport to date.

McLaren also appears to be making progress, but the team’s positivity will have undoubtedly been dented by Fernando Alonso’s stoppage during FP3 on Saturday morning. The Spaniard was sidelined by a problem with his power unit that the team has been working hard to repair ahead of qualifying.
