German racer Rene Rast is relishing his LMP1 debut for Audi at the upcoming 6 Hours of Spa on May 2, the second round of the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship.
Audi will field a third R18 e-tron quattro at Spa and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June, with Rast joining Filipe Alberquerque and Marco Bonanomi in the no. 9 car.
Alberquerque and Bonanomi raced in the third Audi at the two races in 2014 alongside Oliver Jarvis, who has since been promoted to the no. 8 car as Tom Kristensen’s replacement.
Spa will mark Rast’s first race in an LMP1 car, though, but he comes into the role with three Porsche Supercup titles under his belt and a great amount of racing experience. He is pictured above racing in the Blancpain GT series last year at Brands Hatch.
Speaking ahed of the race, Rast made no secret of his excitement about racing at the legendary Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, and said that he feels well prepared for the event.
“The track in the Ardennes suits me really well and I can hardly wait for my first race in the R18 after the many kilometres I drove it in testing,” the German said.
“I’ve known Filipe and Marco from previous races. Audi has prepared me well for my new task.”
Audi will be matched in fielding three cars by Porsche, with Formula 1 driver Nico Hulkenberg joining Nick Tandy and Earl Bamber in the no. 19 919-Hybrid for Spa and Le Mans.
The Force India driver has been busy testing ahead of the race, completing some simulator work to ensure that he is ready to race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time.
