Indy 500 refresher running, RoP gets underway today at IMS

With the month of May now officially here, so too is opening day for the Indianapolis 500.

Already one round of practice and refresher running/rookie orientation is underway, with a handful of noteworthy items in the first on-track running of the month with the new manufacturer super speedway aero kits.

Through noon ET, the only yellow flags flew for debris and track inspection.

  • Justin Wilson, in his first running in an IndyCar with the new aero kits and first running in an IndyCar since last August at Auto Club Speedway, led the opening practice session for Andretti Autosport at more than 223 mph, 223.989.  Honda cars occupied five of the top six positions.
  • Sebastien Bourdais shook down both the No. 4 KV Racing Technology Chevrolet and the No. 88 KVSH/Jonathan Byrd’s Racing Chevrolet this morning. Stefano Coletti is out of the country due to a visa issue, per Trackside Online, while Bryan Clauson had his first laps back in an IndyCar since 2012 in the No. 88 car.
  • Davey Hamilton did a shakedown lap in the No. 24 Robert Graham Chevrolet for Dreyer & Reinbold/Kingdom Racing. Townsend Bell will be in the car starting next week; the NBCSN IndyCar analyst is on assignment this weekend in Monterey, racing the No. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
