MONTMELO – Nico Rosberg has heaped praise upon his Mercedes team after dominating the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday to claim his first victory of the 2015 Formula 1 season.
The German driver controlled the race from pole position, only losing the lead for a handful of laps through the pit stops before crossing the line to win the race by 17.5 seconds.
Rosberg became the ninth different winner of the Spanish Grand Prix in the past nine years, and was delighted with the result.
“It was a perfect weekend,” Rosberg said. “Great to be on pole and have a race like this. Very, very happy. I’d like to thank the team, the car has been awesome all weekend. It has been great.
“I got a great start as well, it has been a while coming but today worked out pretty well.
“I am just enjoying the day. Winning here in Barcelona was great and I’ll just enjoy that together with the team tonight, and then we look towards the next race.”
With victory, Rosberg cut the gap to Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton at the top of the drivers’ championship to just 20 points, having trailed by 27 heading into the weekend.
The German driver has now finished every race in the same position that he started in 2015, and will be keen to continue his revival in the past few races at the Monaco Grand Prix in two weeks’ time.
