Ricciardo frustrated to only qualify fourth in Monaco

Daniel Ricciardo was left frustrated following qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix on Saturday after finishing fourth behind the Mercedes drivers and the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel.

Ricciardo finished less than two-tenths of a second behind Vettel in the final part of qualifying, and will line up alongside his former teammate on the second row of the grid.

Despite matching his best Saturday result of the season, Ricciardo believed that he could have broken into the top three had it not been for a communication error with the Red Bull pit wall.

“I’m a bit frustrated because I think we should be P3,” Ricciardo said. “There was a miscommunication from the pit wall starting the last lap and it’s a missed opportunity for us.

“At Monaco, every grid position counts, but we’re in a good place to attack and we’ll go all out to try for a podium finish in tomorrow’s race. I always enjoy this track and having to fight the car over the kerbs. I’ll try to have a bit of fun tomorrow.”

Ricciardo starts as the leading Red Bull in Monaco, but was nearly out-qualified by sophomore teammate Daniil Kvyat on Saturday. The Russian also matched his best qualifying result of the season, finishing fifth, but remains ambitious.

“It’s a positive qualifying result for the team,” Kvyat said. “But we’re not where we want to be, although we’re making progress and heading in the right direction.

“We’re in a good position for tomorrow’s race. The rain didn’t affect us too much during qualifying but we’ll have to wait and see if it’s a factor tomorrow.”
