Mercedes AMG Petronas team principal Toto Wolff took part in a Twitter Q&A earlier this week to explain the decision to pit Lewis Hamilton that ultimately cost the British driver victory at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Using the hashtag #AskToto, fans were encouraged to send in their questions to Wolff on Tuesday as Mercedes continues to face a backlash from Hamilton’s dedicated fans over the decision.
Having led the race by 20 seconds, a safety car period was poised to eliminate Hamilton’s lead and potentially leave him at risk of being passed by teammate Nico Rosberg or Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.
Mercedes opted to pit Hamilton, believing that he would emerge in first place and be able to pull away from the chasing pack with fresh tires.
However, he came back out on track in third place, and was unable to pass either Vettel or race-winner Rosberg in the final eight laps of racing, leaving him dejected and frustrated.
As part of the Twitter Q&A, Wolff explained how the Mercedes pit wall was informed by Hamilton that his tires were “not good”, prompting the team to make a split decision and bring him in.
Wolff also insisted that none of the Mercedes crew would be lose their job over the error, saying that the team was not looking to play the blame game.
Here are some of the other questions and answers from Tuesday’s lively forum.
