Mick Schumacher, son of Formula One legend Michael Schumacher, sustained the first significant crash of his budding racing career Sunday at Austria’s Red Bull Ring in a junior ADAC Formula 4 series race.
Competing in his fourth career Formula 4 race, Schumacher, 16, was running 10th when he was hit from behind by fellow driver Thomas Preining, according to The Express newspaper of London.
Schumacher, who won in his third start in F4 in April, reportedly hit the outside retaining wall rather hard, which resulted in a broken right hand. The injury was reported to be an “uncomplicated fracture.”
The race was black-flagged after the wreck and Schumacher was credited with a 10th place finish.
To his credit, the younger Schumacher took the day’s outcome in stride, according to The Express: “I’m okay. It’s a shame my race had to end so early.”
