Castroneves quickest in final Honda Indy Toronto practice

Penske’s Helio Castroneves closed out the final free practice session for Honda Indy Toronto on top ahead of qualifying later on Saturday.

The Brazilian driver posted a fastest lap time of 59.6424s as the drivers made up for the running lost in practice on Friday by rain with a high number of laps in the final 45 minute session.

Once again, it was Penske who dominated proceedings throughout the session as Simon Pagenaud and Juan Pablo Montoya traded fastest lap times early in the session.

Montoya became the first driver of the weekend to dip under the one minute mark, and was joined towards the top of the timesheets by CFH Racing’s Josef Newgarden in second place.

However, it was Castroneves who managed to rally and post the fastest time of all, finishing ahead of the duo with a time that was 0.1896 seconds quicker than that of his teammate.

Will Power was unable to dip under the 60 second barrier, but still did enough to finish fourth ahead of Tony Kanaan and Simon Pagenaud. Graham Rahal finished seventh ahead of Sebastien Bourdais, whilst Scott Dixon was fortunate to finish ninth after very nearly being taken out by Stefano Coletti early in the session.

In his best efforts to get the grips with the street circuit, Coletti suffered a number of spins, with the biggest coming towards the end of a session when he lost control on the exit of turn 11 and stalled out on-track.

The session was red flagged, and although it returned to green with 90 seconds remaining, only Rahal could find more time before the checkered flag was shown.

Qualifying takes place at 2:30pm ET on Saturday, but will not be shown on NBCSN until 5pm ET.
