The high hopes CFH Racing had coming into Saturday’s MAV TV 500 came to a sudden end when teammates Ed Carpenter and Josef Newgarden wrecked, leaving both drivers with DNFs.
On Lap 158 of the scheduled 250-lap event at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., Carpenter was running ninth and Newgarden 10th. Newgarden tried to get a run on his teammate on the outside, but Carpenter drifted up the track, leaving his teammate with no room to stop and contact resulted.
“I just apologized,” Carpenter said on NBCSN. “I got into (Turn) 3 with a pack of cars. Got shoved down. Guys are driving crazy. Got understeer and pushed up the track. Didn’t get much information from my spotter. Pretty unfortunate. It sucks pretty bad.”
Although he was hoping to potentially to add to his wins at Birmingham and Toronto, Newgarden took the wreck in stride.
“It’s racing,” he said. “The only reason we got together, we were just next to each other at that moment. One of those deals, it’s just racing.”
