Over 100,000 fans are expected to flock to Silverstone on Saturday for British Grand Prix qualifying, and many of them will be there in support of one man: Lewis Hamilton.

The defending Formula 1 world champion has designs on a third home victory this weekend following successes in his championship years of 2008 and 2014, but will face a stern challenge from Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg on Sunday.

Rosberg, also a former winner at Silverstone, dominated proceedings on Friday during practice as Hamilton appeared to struggle to find his rhythm.

However, two gearbox issues so far this weekend are likely to leave the German sweating on the reliability of his car ahead of qualifying, which is set to take place in dry and sunny conditions.

Behind the duelling Mercedes drivers at the front, Ferrari appears to be leading the way as the ‘best of the rest’ once again as Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen go in search of the team’s first podium finish in three races.

The likes of Williams, Red Bull and even Toro Rosso will also be scrapping for position in the top ten, with the latter showing a particularly impressive pace throughout practice on Friday and Saturday morning.

However, it may be another difficult home race for McLaren, with Fernando Alonso predicting on Friday that the team may not even make it past Q1.
