Hamilton completes practice hat-trick in Hungary

Lewis Hamilton completed a clean sweep of practice sessions in Hungary on Saturday morning by edging out Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg at the top of the timesheets in FP3.

Hamilton recorded a fastest lap time of 1:22.997 to finish 0.098 seconds clear of Rosberg in top spot as Mercedes once again dominated proceedings at the Hungaroring.

However, the team’s final practice was dampened slightly when Rosberg’s car came to a halt at the end of the pit lane when trying to complete a practice start.

Once the session was complete, the Mercedes mechanics wheeled the German’s car back to their garage so they could investigate the issue, with initial feedback suggesting that his engine had stalled.

Ferrari once again failed to put up much of a fight to Mercedes, with Sebastian Vettel finished eight-tenths of a second further back in third place as the best of the rest.

The Italian marque’s lack of reliability continued into FP3 as Kimi Raikkonen suffered a water leak on his car, meaning that he could complete just 12 laps, finishing 16th in the final standings.

Red Bull’s impressive form continued as Daniil Kvyat finished fourth in FP3. Teammate Daniel Ricciardo was unable to match this pace, though, down in ninth. Carlos Sainz Jr finished fifth for Toro Rosso ahead of Nico Hulkenberg as Force India returned to the track after missing FP2.

Max Verstappen underpinned Sainz’s pace in the sister Toro Rosso by finishing seventh ahead of Fernando Alonso, who once again impressed in the McLaren. Romain Grosjean rounded out the top ten for Lotus.
