Ryan Hunter-Reay finished fastest in the final warm-up ahead of today’s Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio despite spinning off and crashing his car at the midway point of the session.
Hunter-Reay posted a fastest lap time of 1:06.5160 to finish three-tenths of a second clear of Helio Castroneves at the top of the standings.
However, Hunter-Reay’s session came to an early end after he ran wide and lost the backend of his car at turn one.
The Andretti driver spun into the wall on the left hand side of the track, sustaining damage to the front and rear and bringing out a red flag with 14 minutes remaining.
The session resumed with five minutes to go, only to soon be red flagged again after Jack Hawksworth went off at the exit of the Carousel, hitting the tire barrier lightly with his car.
Stewards took the decision to throw the checkered flag soon after this incident, leaving Hunter-Reay in P1 ahead of Castroneves and Hawksworth, with the Englishman continuing his good form at Mid-Ohio in the final warm-up.
Simon Pagenaud bounced back from his early exit in qualifying to finish fourth in the warm-up ahead of Marco Andretti and Scott Dixon, who will start from pole position later today.
Will Power finished seventh ahead of Charlie Kimball on Sunday morning, whilst Sebastien Bourdais and Tony Kanaan rounded out the top ten.
