It might have been overlooked in the grand scheme of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race on Sunday, but the DeltaWing DWC13 coupe enjoyed its best run of the season after a needed, second straight trouble-free weekend and overall finish of sixth place.
That might not sound like much on paper, but considering the DeltaWing, since 2013, has only finished three races in total (Road America 2013 and 2014, and Road Atlanta 2014, the latter in a car-best fourth place overall) since a changeover of many of its partners, it’s a decent feat.
The DeltaWing finished ninth overall at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in July, eighth in Prototype, surviving early race contact from a Porsche to earn its first finish of the season.
Sunday at Road America, the team picked up where it has left off in the previous two years at the track that seems to suit it best.
A strategic gamble hoping for a yellow put pause to the team’s planned strategy – Katherine Legge needed a late splash of fuel – but Legge and Memo Rojas still ended sixth overall and in Prototype. It matched their result from last year, and was one shy of a fifth place overall (third in LMP1) result in the 2013 American Le Mans Series race, when both Legge and Andy Meyrick led the race overall.
“I’m very happy with the job the entire team did today. We took a gamble with pit stops and it didn’t pay off, but we had to do something different,” Legge said in a team release.
“There wasn’t a yellow when we hoped there would be one late in the race but that’s the way it goes. We were quick compared to what we have been and we finished the race with no issues.
“We’re closer in times now to the top cars so hopefully we can continue this progression forward. We’re relatively buoyed going into the last two races of the season, including our home race at Road Atlanta.”
The result comes as the team is in the midst of planning its program for 2016 and figuring out what to do for 2017 when new global Prototype regulations come into play – more here from Sportscar365 – but it keeps up a good run of form for the team at the picturesque, 4.048-mile road course.
