Three-time X Games gold medalist Scott Speed will remain with Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross, signing a contract extension, the team announced Friday.

The new extension, which will keep Speed with VAR through the end of the 2017 season, was announced prior to this weekend’s seventh round on the schedule of the 2015 Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship.

The Red Bull Global Rallycross DC, presented by Volkswagen, takes place Friday and Saturday at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. NBC will air the race live on Saturday, Aug 15, at 3:00 p.m. ET.

Speed, a five-time GRC winner, drives the No. 41 Volkswagen Beetle for VAR.

“I’m super excited to re-sign for another two years with Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross,” Speed said in a team media release. “I’ve been lucky enough to be able to surround myself with an awesome crew and support team; everyone here feels like family.

“My experience with the team over the last two years has been an amazing journey. We’ve continued to make strides in the development of our program and we’re ready to begin to assert ourselves as the dominant team in this sport.”

Speed finished third in last year’s championship standings. He’s currently fifth in this year’s standings at the mid-point of the season, 80 points out of first place.

Speed’s best outings thus far in 2015 have been three runner-up showings: in the season opener at Fort Lauderdale and back-to-back second-place finishes at the Detroit double-header.

He also won his third consecutive X Games gold medal in the non-points paying round at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

“We’re extremely happy to bring Scott back to the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team for the next two seasons,” said team owner Michael Andretti. “Scott fit right in with the Andretti organization and with his help we’ve quickly established ourselves in Red Bull Global Rallycross during our first two seasons in the series.”
