Nico Rosberg bounced back from an early problem on his Mercedes car to finish as the fastest driver in FP1 on Friday morning, beating teammate and championship rival Lewis Hamilton by two-tenths of a second.

Hamilton and Rosberg are set to renew their battle for the second half of the 2015 season following a month-long summer break that has given the F1 paddock a chance to detox and debrief.

From here on in though, a relentless run of nine races in 15 weeks will following, all starting in Belgium this weekend.

Following on from FP1, FP2 takes place this afternoon at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps as the pecking order becomes increasingly clear ahead of this weekend’s race.

Hamilton and Rosberg may remain each other’s biggest rival, but both Mercedes drivers have been forced to keep one eye on their mirrors in recent races following the emergence of Ferrari and Williams.

Both teams have upset Mercedes in the past six weeks, with Ferrari taking a particularly big scalp by dominating the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Quite whether anyone can mount a serious challenge to the Silver Arrows this weekend remains to be seen, but there is still everything to play for at Spa.
