Official update from INDYCAR: Justin Wilson hospitalized, in a coma, in critical condition

INDYCAR has confirmed Justin Wilson is in a coma, in critical condition, following his accident in today’s ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway.

INDYCAR’s official statement, posted just after 9 p.m. ET, reads as follows:

INDYCAR driver Justin Wilson suffered a severe head injury during today’s event at Pocono Raceway. Wilson is currently in a coma and in critical condition while undergoing further evaluation at Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, Pa.

INDYCAR sends its thoughts and prayers to Justin, his family and Andretti Autosport during this difficult time.

Additional updates to Wilson’s condition will be released when available.

Wilson was struck by a piece of flying debris exiting Turn 1 following an accident by Sage Karam, after Karam lost control through the turn and hit the outside retaining wall. Wilson’s car careened to the inside retaining wall and hit nearly head-on.

MotorSportsTalk will have further updates upon official updates from INDYCAR, and/or Wilson’s family or the Andretti Autosport team. We extend our best wishes and thoughts for Justin at this time.
