Lewis Hamilton arrives at Monza today on the brink of extending his Formula 1 drivers’  championship lead to over 30 points after scoring his 11th pole position of the season on Saturday.

Hamilton has dominated proceedings so far this weekend at Monza, finishing as the fastest driver in every single session thanks to his newly-upgraded Mercedes power unit.

To make matters even better for Hamilton, teammate Nico Rosberg was forced to downgrade back to his old power unit after a problem emerged on his new one, leaving him to qualify only fourth on the grid.

The two Mercedes drivers are split by the Ferrari duo of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel for the start of the Italian Grand Prix, setting the stage for a great battle between the quartet at the front of the field.

Hamilton and Rosberg are currently separated by 28 points at the top of the drivers’ championship following the Briton’s victory at Spa two weeks ago. Victory at Monza would see this advantage increase to at least 35 points.

It would also mark a third Italian Grand Prix victory for Hamilton, which would draw him level with legends of racing such as Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio and Alain Prost.

More importantly in the short-term, it would see him close out the European leg of the 2015 F1 season in perfect fashion as he continues to surge towards a third world title.

With a number of storylines lingering up and down the field, make sure to check out our “What to watch for” post here.
