Will Power’s 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series season is one he’d like to forget, where nothing seemed to click although he still had a mathematical - if remote - shot to win the championship by way of double points at the last race.
But for 2016, the 2014 champ is already calling his shot.
Asked whether IndyCar would need to change anything about its racing format for 2016, Power said no, but then added his warning shot.
“No, I think the Series has produced great racing until the very end over the years. When you get four people at the last race of the year at Sonoma with a chance to win the title, I call that pretty exciting. Then, again, I think I’m going to wrap up the championship in 2016 long before the last race,” Power said in an interview with the Detroit Free Press.
Power reflected on the year where he said the “unexpected happened,” and also noted that of course a driver who maximized his or her score in double points races would be a fan of double points. He did say he’d like to see them removed, though.
Power, now 34, also confirmed to the Free Press’ Mike Brudenell he’s on a multi-year contract with Team Penske and would like to continue in the sport for another four or five years.
At 34, Power is the second-youngest member of Team Penske. Simon Pagenaud is 31 while Helio Castroneves is 40 and Juan Pablo Montoya will turn 40 later this month.
