Formula 1 heads under the lights on Sunday for the Singapore Grand Prix around the streets of Marina Bay, and in the dark of night, an ambush could be on the cards.

Mercedes has ruled Formula 1 with an iron fist over the past 18 months, claiming all but five wins and boasting a record of 23 straight pole positions heading into yesterday’s qualifying session.

However, that all came crashing down as Sebastian Vettel stormed to his first pole since Brazil 2013 to end Ferrari’s three-year long drought and knock Mercedes off its perch.

Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen qualified third and the Red Bull duo of Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat finished second and fourth respectively in Q3, leaving Mercedes to settle for the third row of the grid.

And it wasn’t even by a small margin. Lewis Hamilton’s bid for an eighth straight pole position saw him finish 1.4 seconds down on Vettel as Mercedes struggled to get its tires working. Teammate Nico Rosberg will start from P6.

This all sets up a fantastic state of play ahead of the race on Sunday. Can Ferrari claim its third win of the season? Or will Red Bull bounce back from qualifying and give Vettel cause for concern at the front?

Most importantly, how will the title fight between Hamilton and Rosberg unfold as they focus on damage limitation?
