Former Formula 1 and Formula E driver Jaime Alguersuari has announced his retirement from motorsport at the age of 25.
Alguersuari made his F1 debut in 2009 with Scuderia Toro Rosso after rising through the Red Bull junior programme, but was dropped by the team at the end of 2011 aged just 21.
The Spaniard most recently raced in Formula E with Virgin Racing, making his last appearance at the Moscow ePrix in June before missing the double-header finale in London due to a medical concern.
At a press conference in Madrid, Alguersuari announced his retirement from racing, claiming that his heart no longer belonged to motorsport.
“I decided to stop because it is time for a change,” Alguersuari said. “Something inside me tells me it’s time to take a new path, because I think I lost the love of this girlfriend who accompanied me all these years.
“It is not a sad day. Now what makes me happy is music, making music. The best thing that happened to me in my life was being thrown out of F1. With F1, I carried frustration, trauma.”
Alguersuari is the second young driver in the space of a few weeks to announce his retirement from racing, following GP2 driver Johnny Cecotto Jr.'s announcement at the age of 26.
