McLaren’s miserable 2015 campaign continued in Brazil on Saturday as both Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button were eliminated in the first stage of qualifying at Interlagos.
Alonso failed to post a lap time in Q1 as a loss of power forced him to park his car up at the side of the circuit, marking his second stoppage of the weekend.
The Spaniard made light of the situation, finding a nearby deckchair from which to watch the remainder of Q1 while catching some sun.
Upon returning to the pit lane, Alonso was joined by teammate Jenson Button after he failed to post a quick enough time to make it through to the second stage of qualifying, finishing 17th.
Both Button and Alonso made light of the situation, sneaking up onto the podium – a first time for everything in 2015 – for a picture, receiving cheers from the Brazilian fans.
Interestingly, this was the first time Button had appeared on the podium at Interlagos since winning the Brazilian Grand Prix back in 2012 – to date, McLaren’s last Formula 1 victory.
