One of the longer-running driver-race engineer pairings in the Verizon IndyCar Series has seen one half of the duo take on a new role.
Charlie Kimball will have a new race engineer for his No. 83 Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet in 2016, as MotorSportsTalk has learned Brad Goldberg, who’s been on the box with the 30-year-old American for several seasons, will move to a different team within the Ganassi racing realm.
Goldberg will serve as race engineer for the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing No. 67 Ford GT, driven by past Ganassi IndyCar ace Ryan Briscoe and Richard Westbrook in the 2016 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season.
He was at the team’s first “not-quite-officially-public-but-more-public-than-not” outing at Daytona International Speedway last month.
One of the more underrated engineers in the IndyCar paddock, Goldberg does have past sports car experience, having served as an engineer with Ganassi’s Daytona Prototype program in 2010, and an assistant engineer for the same program in 2004.
Kimball had one of his better years qualifying in 2015 and despite some peaks and valleys, ended third in both of the double points races - his best results of the season came at the Indianapolis 500 and the season-ending GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma.
Now, he’ll head into 2016 with a new face on the timing stand that he’ll be working with.
