Sebastian Vettel believes that Ferrari is on the right path to catch Mercedes at the front of the Formula 1 field in 2016 following a strong showing this year.
Vettel’s first season with Ferrari proved to be a fruitful one as he scored three race wins en route to third place in the drivers’ championship and led the team to the runner-up spot in the teams’ standings behind Mercedes.
Despite struggling to match Mercedes for pace for much of the year, Vettel is confident that Ferrari is heading in the right direction to put up more of a fight to its rivals in 2016.
“Well, we want to be competitive next year against Mercedes, so I won’t go into details and tell our secrets,” Vettel said.
“The fact is that we have to improve in a lot of areas, aero, engine etc. but I think the results of this season have shown that we are on the right path.
“So now we just have to focus on ourselves.”
When asked what he was most surprised by in 2015, Vettel admitted that he did not expect Ferrari to fare as well as it did.
“Well, I would say the final result of the team,” Vettel said. “I wasn’t expecting such a strong season with Ferrari this year.”
