The first couple days of the 2016 Dakar Rally are in the books, and videos from today’s first show on NBCSN are linked within this post.
While rain and mud has plagued the Dakar Rally, delaying the start of the first day, the world-renowned endurance race has still managed to maintain its spectacular and dramatic edge. The above video chronicles that and also introduces a few of the top expected contenders in the bike category.
Stage 2 explores the sights and scenes of Provincia de Cordoba in Argentina. Kevin Benavides, introduced above, steals the show as a new local idol, not losing his edge on the roads he knows so well.
As it was for the bikes the day’s stage for the cars was reduced by over 300km. In the first real day of racing after the start of Stage 1 was delayed due to poor weather, drivers are given the chance to hit it hard.
Rafal Sonik, the 2015 Dakar winner on quads, has a tough day, losing over six minutes to Ignacio Casale, who had a near perfect stage to end the day as the overall leader after Stage 2.
Former car driver Federico Villagra is the surprise of Stage 2, posting the best time of the bunch and just edging 2007 champion Hans Stacey, who was only a couple of seconds off the pace.
