From the “you don’t see this everyday file” comes news that Andretti Autosport will put its No. 28 DHL Honda - the same Dallara DW12 chassis No. 057 that Ryan Hunter-Reay took to a dramatic win in the 2014 Indianapolis 500 - up for auction.
It’s not only that that makes it abnormal, but also the fact it’s still an active chassis.
The Gooding & Company auction has this car listed for auction with an estimated price target of $600,000 to $750,000.
According to the lot description, “Andretti will restore and repair the car to its 2014 Indianapolis 500 aero kit and livery and will deliver it to the owner, within the continental US. This lot does not include the Honda race engine, as it is owned and retained by the manufacturer. The sale of this lot is unprecedented in modern motorsports.”
Additionally, season-long credentials would be in order for the purchaser. From the lot description, “Andretti Autosport will provide the buyer with two season-long credentials and team hospitality passes granting gate, garage, and limited pit access for every Verizon IndyCar Series race through the 2018 season, including the Indianapolis 500.
“The package will also include four single-event guest credentials and team hospitality passes at each of the IndyCar races that Andretti Autosport competes in through 2018, except for the Grand Prix of Indianapolis and Indianapolis 500.”
The car, however, will race through the end of its projected lifespan in 2018.
It’s an interesting strategy to say the least because it could be the start of a trend where teams look to raise capital by selling cars, even if the car is still active.
