The Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires has been somewhat devoid of news lately, but has received some good news this Friday morning with the confirmation of Aaron Telitz as one of Team Pelfrey’s drivers for next season.

Telitz, who at 24 is one of the more experienced drivers on the Mazda Road to Indy ladder, will step up from the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda series into Pro Mazda next year.

The Wisconsinite, who now lives in Minnesota, has raced the last two seasons with ArmsUp Motorsports and Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing, respectively.

He’s also been busy in testing, having helped RJB Motorsports shake down its USF2000 cars at November’s Chris Griffis Memorial Mazda Road to Indy test at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, and done separate Pro Mazda tests with Pelfrey and Juncos Racing.

As tempting as it is to say this “Star Wars” junkie will be driving the “Red 5,” it’s more likely he’ll be in the traditional No. 81 or 82 car for Pelfrey.

He’ll join the team that saw Santiago Urrutia claim last year’s title before advancing into the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires. Pato O’Ward has also been linked to a seat here for a return for a second season.

Telitz joins Juncos’ quartet of announced drivers ahead of this year’s Pro Mazda season.

You’d expect a flurry of announcements to come during the next month or so before testing at Barber Motorsports Park in March, and the season opener at St. Petersburg the weekend of March 11-13.
