AVONDALE, Ariz. - The magic 190-mph barrier - if there was one - has been hit during Saturday’s first three-hour test session at the Verizon IndyCar Series’ Test in the West, a.k.a “PrixView,” at Phoenix International Raceway.

A mix of tow-assisted and non-tow single car laps eclipsed the 190 mph average speed mark, with times in the low 19.2 to 19.3 second range for the best.

Ultimately Simon Pagenaud set the fastest time of the session, at 19.2884 seconds, in the No. 22 Hewlett Packard Enterprise Chevrolet for Team Penske, at a speed of 190.747 mph.

Josef Newgarden was second in the No. 21 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet for Ed Carpenter Racing at 190.714, with teammate and team principal Carpenter third at 190.321 in the No. 20 Fuzzy’s Chevrolet. Carpenter’s speed was also the fastest non-tow lap of the session.

Of note, Helio Castroneves only ran 15 laps in the session and did not set a representative time.
