The Grand Prix Commission has announced that winglets have been banned from the Moto3 class with immediate effect following a meeting earlier this week.

The introduction of winglets to MotoGP at the beginning of the season has been a widely-debated topic, with nine-time motorcycle world champion Valentino Rossi calling them “ugly”.

Winglets were banned from Moto2 back in March, and a ban on them in Moto3 was planned to come into force at the end of the season.

However, this ban has now been brought forwards, coming into effect for the upcoming Italian Grand Prix next weekend.

“In March of this year it was agreed that aerodynamic wings in the Moto2 class would be banned immediately. It was also agreed that wings would be banned in the Moto3 class from 2017,” a statement read.

“Following a unanimous proposal from all Manufacturers in the Moto3 Working Group, the Grand Prix Commission have confirmed that the ban on aerodynamic wings in the Moto3 class will now be effective immediately.”
