Drama struck on the opening lap of the Spanish Grand Prix when Mercedes teammates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg crashed out in an incident that will only stoke the fire of their tense relationship.
Rosberg made the better start off the line to sweep around the outside of Hamilton at Turn 1, only for the Briton to try and move down the inside three corners later.
Rosberg moved to cover his inside line, but Hamilton did not back out of the move and took to the grass before losing control and crashing into Rosberg ahead.
Both Mercedes cars were eliminated on the spot, leaving Rosberg and Hamilton evidently frustrated as they clambered out of their cars.
The blame game is set to be played out in the next few hours, but Mercedes non-executive director Niki Lauda felt that Hamilton was to blame.
TV footage from the paddock showed Rosberg and Hamilton heading to the Mercedes’ motorhome together, still with their helmets on, with some big questions waiting to be answered.
