He won’t be in this year’s 100th Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil barring any last-minute changes, but Sebastian Saavedra still will be busy this upcoming weekend as he’s set to make his Red Bull Global Rallycross debut at Phoenix’s Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.
Saavedra, the 25-year-old Colombian who has spent parts of six seasons in the Verizon IndyCar Series from 2010 to 2015, will drive the No. 77 BFGoodrich Ford Fiesta in his first-ever rallycross event. A team was not immediately specified within a series release.
BFGoodrich makes its tire debut this weekend in the series.
“I’m really excited to make my Red Bull GRC debut this weekend in Phoenix,” Saavedra said in the release. “I’ve known a lot of the people in the series for a long time, and I’m really looking forward to adding rallycross to my resume. It’ll be the first time I’ve ever raced anything like this, so it will be a challenge that I’m excited to welcome. Four wheels and high horsepower? Sign me up any day!”
Series CEO Colin Dyne added, “We are excited to welcome Sebastian to Red Bull GRC in Phoenix. Sebastian is just the latest of many world-class racing drivers to give rallycross a try, and we expect to see many more in the years to come. We’re looking forward to see how he stacks up against our field in his debut this weekend.”
Coverage of this weekend’s Red Bull Global Rallycross races from Phoenix will air on Sunday, May 22, at 2 p.m. ET on NBCSN.
