INDIANAPOLIS –  The rain gods have put a slight damper on the start of the first day of qualifying for the 100th Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil.

Rain delayed track activity by several hours.

Here’s where we are now after initial practice, which was set for 8 a.m. this morning, has been delayed to the rain:

  • Group 1 practice: 11-11:30 (Tony Kanaan, Simon Pagenaud, Marco Andretti, Alexander Rossi, Sebastien Bourdais, Josef Newgarden, Oriol Servia, JR Hildebrand, Mikhail Aleshin, Will Power, Helio Castroneves, Bryan Clauson, Matthew Brabham, Scott Dixon, Max Chilton, Buddy Lazier, Alex Tagliani)
  • Group 2 practice: 11:30-12 (Takuma Sato, Townsend Bell, Gabby Chaves, Spencer Pigot, Charlie Kimball, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Stefan Wilson, Jack Hawksworth, Juan Pablo Montoya, James Hinchcliffe, Carlos Munoz, Sage Karam, Pippa Mann, Ed Carpenter, Conor Daly, Graham Rahal)

Cars in Group 1 need to be into technical inspection by 12:15 p.m. Then cars in Group 2 have to be in by 12:45 p.m.

Qualifying is tentatively scheduled from 1 to 5:50 p.m. to set the Fast Nine Shootout cars.

Here’s a link to the qualifying procedures and infographic.

And after a week of practice, here’s what we think it means. Whether it materializes or not? Who knows.

UPDATE, 12:45 p.m.: Good news is track activity is underway after a several-hour delay owing first to track drying, then weepers, at the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Bad news is the track is under yellow following the second accident of the month on the oval, when Max Chilton crashed in Turn 2. He was out of his No. 8 Gallagher Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, after losing control and spinning around into the wall nose first, then left-side rear wheels.

The revised schedule per INDYCAR and IMS track president J. Douglas Boles:

12:37-12:57 p.m., Group 1 practice
12:57-1:17 p.m., Group 2 practice

2:15 p.m., Qualifications begin

Track time extended to 7:00 p.m. today

With three races remaining in the NTT IndyCar Series season, Scott Dixon has a commanding lead and history on his side entering Friday’s opener of the Harvest GP at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The five-time series champion leads defending champ Josef Newgarden by 72 points.

Since 2014, the points leader with three races left has won the championship in five of the past six years, including Dixon in ’18.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver has led the championship standings following every round after opening 2020 with three consecutive victories. Dixon also led the points by 78 points with three races remaining when he won the title in 2008.

Dixon, Newgarden, Pato O’Ward, Colton Herta, Will Power, Graham Rahal and Takuma Sato are championship eligible.

Anyone outside 108 points of the lead after Indy will be eliminated heading into the Oct. 25 season finale at St. Petersburg, Florida.
