Lewis Hamilton has been granted permission by the FIA stewards in Baku to change his damaged front-left tire ahead of the start of Sunday’s European Grand Prix.

Hamilton locked up heavily towards the end of Q2 on Saturday, damaging the tires that he was due to start today’s race from.

Mercedes confirmed that it had lobbied with the race stewards for a change, and has been given permission to switch one tire from his race-start set.

The front-left will be replaced by a tire from another set that has completed the same number of laps.

“We have received permission to swap the front left of his race start set and have done so with a front left from a different set,” a spokesperson from Mercedes confirmed.

Hamilton will start from P10 on the grid in Baku after crashing out of Q3, while Mercedes teammate and title rival Nico Rosberg is set to line up on pole.

The European Grand Prix is live on NBCSN and Live Extra from 8am ET on Sunday.
