Andrea Iannone picked up his first victory in MotoGP as Ducati romped to a one-two finish in Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring.
Ducati arrived in Austria as the favorite to win given the strengths of its bike - namely top speed - and the characteristics of the circuit in Spielberg.
Iannone scored his second pole position in the premier class of motorcycle racing on Saturday, but faced a challenge from Yamaha riders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo.
Rossi passed Iannone for the lead on the opening lap of the race, but was quickly relegated back into second place as the Ducati rider took control of proceedings.
Dovizioso battled back from a poor start to move up into second place ahead of both Yamaha riders before passing Iannone on lap 10.
Iannone moved back ahead with seven laps remaining before keeping Dovizioso back through the closing stages, crossing the line to score his first victory in MotoGP.
The result also marked Ducati’s first win since the 2010 Australian Grand Prix with Casey Stoner, who reportedly turned down a wildcard entry for the weekend.
Lorenzo completed the podium for Yamaha, ending a rough patch of form, while teammate Rossi followed in fourth place on the sister bike.
Marc Marquez bounced back from dislocating his shoulder on Saturday to finish fifth, losing just a handful of points in the title race with Lorenzo and Rossi.
Suzuki’s Maverick Vinales finished sixth ahead of Honda’s Dani Pedrosa and Pramac Ducati rider Scott Redding, while Bradley Smith and Pol Espargaro rounded out the top 10.
