Lewis Hamilton added his name to a very elite list on Saturday by taking his fifth Formula 1 pole position at Monza, dominating all three stages of qualifying for Mercedes.

F1 drivers’ championship leader Hamilton finished almost half a second clear of title rival and teammate Nico Rosberg in Q3, drawing level with Ayrton Senna and Juan Manuel Fangio with a fifth Italian Grand Prix pole in the process.

The enormity of the achievement was not lost on Hamilton, but the Briton knew that the bigger task was to follow on Sunday as he bids to extend his points lead.

A fightback from P21 on the grid to third place last weekend in Belgium ensured Hamilton limited the impact of Rosberg’s victory. Now the challenge will be carrying this momentum through at Monza and take a fourth victory at ‘La Pista Magica’.

Behind Mercedes, Ferrari will be looking to give its home fans something to celebrate at Monza, while the likes of Red Bull, Williams and Force India will also be in the mix through the top 10.
