After winning his third Paralympic gold medal on Wednesday, ex-Formula 1 and CART driver Alex Zanardi added to his Rio haul by winning a silver on Thursday in the men’s H5 road race.

Zanardi defended his hand-cycling time trial gold medal from the London games on Wednesday, before entering Thursday’s event chasing another successful title defence.

However, the Italian was left to settle for silver after narrowly losing out to South Africa’s Ernst van Dyk.

Zanardi’s silver came on the 15th anniversary of the crash in a CART race at the Lausitzring in Germany that saw him lose both legs.

Zanardi now has five Paralympic medals to his name, three of which are gold, as well as New York City marathon and world championship titles.
