The Formula 1 silly season has died down in recent weeks, but may be set to turn a surprise in the coming days if reports that Nico Hulkenberg are set for a shock switch to Renault come to fruition.
Reports in the German media (Auto Bild) and via Autosport, among others, have linked the German with a switch from Sahara Force India – which only just officially confirmed Sergio Perez for 2017 in the last couple weeks.
Hulkenberg has a deal with Force India and confirmed this back in July, but would need to break the contract via an escape clause in order to test the open waters of another team – if one exists.
Renault’s Frederic Vasseur said he hoped to finalize the team’s 2017 lineup by early September.
Of course, it’s now October 10 and with Perez now out of the frame, Hulkenberg possibly in it, Esteban Ocon linked to a seat and Kevin Magnussen and Jolyon Palmer currently on board, we’re starting to wonder if the Enstone-based team has plans to build a five-seater next year.
