While Formula 1 championship leaders Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton arrived in Bahrain as the favorites, neither could take pole position in Saturday’s qualifying session at Sakhir.

It was Valtteri Bottas who sprang a surprise and set the pace in the final part of qualifying at the Bahrain International Circuit, securing his maiden F1 pole in the process in just his third race for Mercedes.

Bottas will be vying for his first F1 victory on Sunday, but with Hamilton and Vettel for close company at the front of the grid, the Finn is set for a fight.
